January Links to Love
It may be cold and even snowy outside but inside it’s perfect for curling up with a good book or discovering something new on an informational or entertainment website.
Here are some resources for these cold winter days:
The Museum of Tolerance over the next few days will be offering FREE virtual screenings of Oscar and other award winning short films. For information and registration go to https://www.museumoftolerance.com/events/upcoming-events.html
If you are looking for a book group, the Jewish Women’s Archive, a treasure trove for those interested in women’s history and issues, runs a weekly discussion with an author. Judith Rosenbaum, JWA’s CEO, is an intelligent, personable leader. For information go to https://jwa.org/events . While at the site, investigate some of the other programs and resources of JWA.
CSP, a consortium of many synagogues, is presenting a series (already underway) on the Torah of Music with Joey Weisenberg and Deborah Sacks Mintz. This is a free series sure to be useful and illuminating to all music lovers. Most programs are recorded for viewing later. For information https://occsp.net/csp-online-events.
Also presented by CSP is a January series Dirshuni: A Taste of Israeli Women's Midrash . Tamar Biala, editor of the modern midrashic work, Dirshuni, has written breathtakingly beautiful midrashim that function as commentaries on the Torah, Israeli society, feminism, and so much more. This series will explore three of her midrashim. You can join for any or all. No Hebrew background is needed. We will be studying in English translation. https://occsp.net/csp-online-events.
Torah Time is a new podcast that helps busy families make quality time for learning the parashah together. Every week, R. Miriam-Simma Walfish and her daughter, Adira, set aside some “Torah Time” for reading and talking about the weekly Torah portion. Now, you’re invited to learn along with them! Torah Time is designed for kids ages 6+ to listen to independently or together with families and teachers. Find the podcast at https://www.hadar.org/torah-collection/torah-time
If you are a member of the Newark Museum, certainly take advantage of the in person and virtual programs. There have been tours to small museums around the world. On January 25, the Museum will tour the Jewish Museum of Frankfurt, Germany. For information and registration for this free tour go to https://www.eventbrite.com/e/museum-crawl-jewish-museum-frankfurt-germany-registration-220223413157
Don’t forget to check the library shelves and catalog for books to supplement and deepen what you find on line.
