On Simchat Torah, the last portion of the book of Deuteronomy is read and immediately followed by the first chapter of Genesis. This reminds the listener that the Torah is a circle, a never-ending message from G!d connecting us to our ancestors. Life itself is also a cycle, from birth to death, with the memories of people's lives living on.
A group of Oheb members decided to get together to celebrate the lives of those dear to them who died since last Rosh HaShanah by co-sponsoring the community Simchat Torah dinner on October 14th.
In her book “The Amen Effect,” Rabbi Sharon Brous captures the essence of finding joy amid sorrow: “Joy doesn’t erase the suffering. It doesn’t deny the pain or distract from it. Rather, joy insists that, even in the darkest hours, we must find some way to still pursue life, love, and goodness.” This perspective is embodied on Simchat Torah. Particularly as we approach the second anniversary of October 7th.
We at Oheb affirm our joy in the Torah and our resilience in facing these incredibly challenging times together. As everyone knows, many of those murdered on October 7th were at the all-night dance festival. To honor the memories of those lost in Israel, and in our immediate families since last Rosh HaShanah, we will dance again. Please dance together with us this Simchat Torah.
